Granite City

Granite City

Length and difficulty: 0.08 miles, easy

A popular bouldering area, Granite City is a tumbled mass of giant boulders. Narrow rock "streets" lead to unexpected caves and ledges. An interesting place to explore, Granite city might not be suitable for all ages. Bouldering, like all rock climbing is inherently risky. Unfortunately, Granite City (like many of our other most scenic areas) attracts litterbugs as well as happy hikers.

From Highlands go east on Main Street, becomes Horse Cove Road, for 4.5 miles to intersection. The trail to Granite City begins 1.3 miles from the left fork in Horse Cove Road where it turns into Whiteside Cove Road. (The right fork leads to the Iron Bridge over the Chattooga River). Look for a cleared area on the left with a narrow place to park. Hike straight up the hill till you come to a small gorge. A bit of exploring to the left will lead you to the city. It would be a good idea to wear jeans here.

From Cashiers: take 107 south 1.7 miles to Whiteside Cove Rd. Then go 6.6 miles to trailhead on right.
