FAQ

Why are the slash pockets on the 1441N located so high on the chest? It looks like they're too high?

The slash pockets are completely lined with Moleskin, and serve primarily as hand warmer pockets. We deliberately put these slash pockets high on the chest for a couple reasons:

  • You can get your hands into the pockets whether you're standing or sitting. If the slash pockets were lower on your torso, you might find it more difficult to get your hands into the pockets when you're sitting.
  • Your hands won't be crowded by the contents of your cargo pockets, as they can be on the Style 1440 Foul Weather Jacket

Why doesn't the 1441N have the gussets and adjustable snap tabs underneath the arms, like the 1438N, 1439N, and 1440N?

The 1438N, 1439N, and 1440N have gussets underneath the arms for greater freedom of movement, and snap tabs that can be adjusted to take in any extra material for a custom fit. When we designed the pattern for the new 1441N, we omitted those features, but without changing its overall fit or compromising freedom of movement. Eventually, we will remove the gussets and snap tabs from the other three coats.

Why is my new Cover Cloth jacket a different shade of green than my older jacket?

Each dye lot accepts dyes to a different degree, depending on fiber variations, harvest time, and processing. We feel that the difference you are seeing is an acceptable color range for our Cover Cloth.

My new Oil Finish Cover Cloth garment feels very wet to the touch. Should I worry about the Oil Finish coming off and staining my clothes?

Oil Finish Cover Cloth often does feel more wet to the touch than Oil Finish Tin Cloth, especially when brand new. Being a lighter weight fabric than Tin Cloth, Cover Cloth cannot absorb as much Oil Finish during the treatment process. This leaves some of the Oil Finish sitting on the surface, giving it a wet feel.
Over time, Cover Cloth will lose the wet feel, as some of the Oil Finish evaporates. If the Oil Finish stains your clothes, you can easily remove it by machine washing or dry cleaning.

Which one of your Oil Finish fabrics is the most water repellent?

Of the three, Oil Finish Cover Cloth and Oil Finish Shelter Cloth are the most water repellent, because they are both more tightly woven than Oil Finish Tin Cloth. The tight weave contributes to the water repellency.

Your catalog says that Oil Finish Cover Cloth is breathable. How does it compare to Gore-Tex®?

Rubber and plastic raingear do not breathe at all, which means as you work or play in the rain, your body heat stays trapped inside the garment, eventually building up condensation that leaves you soggy and uncomfortable.
We describe our Oil Finish Cover Cloth as breathable, when compared to rubber or plastic raingear, because it offers superior water repellency, but at the same time will allow air to push through. However, Oil Finish Cover Cloth is generally not as breathable as high-tech synthetic fabrics, such as those that use Gore-Tex breathable membranes.

My Cover Cloth garment smells pretty bad from being stuffed in a damp corner of my basement over the summer. Is there anything that I can do to get rid of the smell?

Our first thought is to air out the garment by hanging it up for a day or two in some fresh air. If that doesn't work, you're probably stuck with the smell. Neither machine washing nor dry cleaning is going to give you a completely satisfactory result, so we advise against those methods
