Fitting

If dry clean, order your normal suit size.

Our catalog and website say, Dry cleaning recommended. If machine washed/line dried, allow for moderate shrinkage. (Shrinkage will be most noticeable in the sleeve length--not so much in the chest or body girth.)

If you plan to dry clean only, then order your normal size.

If you plan to machine wash/line dry, then you will encounter moderate shrinkage and you can probably order your normal size.

If you plan to machine dry instead of line dry, you will probably encounter more than moderate shrinkage and you should consider ordering a size up to allow for the additional shrinkage.

Care

How should I clean my Safari Cloth garment?

Professional dry cleaning is recommended if you want to avoid shrinkage completely. This will completely remove the water repellent and stain resistant finish (on garments that are treated this way).

Safari Cloth is machine washable. Even though it has been preshrunk, it is still possible that Safari Cloth may shrink an additional 2-3% over several washings, especially if washed in warm or hot water, and thrown in a machine dryer. To minimize shrinkage, machine wash in cold water, and line dry.

The color can fade with repeated washing.

Do I need to re-treat my Safari Cloth to maintain its water repellency?

The durable water repellent and stain resistant finish washes out with each washing. After repeated washing, it may be necessary to treat the fabric to maintain water repellency. We recommend that you use Scotchguard, or any other stain guard or water repellent treatment that is suitable for cotton clothing.

FAQ

Why do you call it Safari Cloth?

From its introduction in the 1960's or 1970's, this fabric has been called Cotton Poplin, but since 1994, we have called it Safari Cloth, to illustrate its suitability as a hot-weather field fabric.

What is the difference between your Dry Finish Cover Cloth and your Safari Cloth?

Safari Cloth and Dry Finish Cover Cloth share the same characteristics: both fabrics are durable, abrasion resistant, lightweight, breathable, and comfortable. The difference is that Safari Cloth has gone through a more time-consuming and expensive manufacturing process, to produce a softer surface that some customers will find to be slightly more comfortable. That extra degree of softness is important in our Safari Cloth shirts and pants, to provide the highest level of comfort.

In contrast, we use Dry Finish Cover Cloth to make our fly fishing vests, fishing shorts, and shooting shirts, since these will probably see more rugged use, and be machine washed instead of professionally dry cleaned.

How does Safari Cloth look after it has been washed? Do I need to iron it?

Since it is made from 100% cotton, you may need to iron your Safari Cloth shirt or pants after washing. However, you can usually wear it more than once without ironing again, because it does not wrinkle as easily as our lighter weight Feather Cloth.
